New Changes in Early Reading: What Wisconsin Act 20 Means for Us

We’re always working to make our schools better and help our students succeed. Recently, a new law called Wisconsin Act 20 was passed, and its focus is improving how we teach reading to our youngest students. This new law will bring some changes, especially for our kindergarten through third-grade students, including an  adjustment of our school calendar to fit these new requirements.

What is Wisconsin Act 20?

At the heart of Wisconsin Act 20 is the ambition to strengthen the foundation of early literacy among students. With that ambition comes a professional development mandate required for educators and administrators to undergo 60 hours of training in science-based literacy instruction over the next two years.

Our School Calendar

To make time for the training required by Act 20, we needed to adjust our school calendar. These changes were made in March of last year, and are important to ensure our teachers are ready to use the new reading strategies that will help our students succeed. See the 2024-25 Academic Calendar including days off.

The first training day is coming up on October 24. This training is necessary to give our teachers the tools they need to support our students.

Options for Childcare

We want to help our families during these training days. The Boys and Girls Club and the Stevens Point Area YMCA are offering childcare on October 24, and the other professional development days that have been added due to Act 20 throughout the year.. Here’s how you can get more information:

Moving Forward

By training our teachers in the best ways to teach reading, we’re making an investment in our children’s futures. We appreciate your support and understanding as we implement these changes to help our students do their best.

Thank you for being an important part of our school community. Together, we can help every child become a better reader and succeed in school!

Sincerely,

Chris Nyman

Assistant Superintendent/Director of Elementary Education
